Synopsis
The remaining Kalahari crystals have provided an energy stop-gap for selected countries, this has enabled their governments to maintain a workable democracy and rebuff the ever-growing tide of anarchism engulfing the world. Rushed attempts to reinstate mistrusted, unreliable and obsolete nuclear power stations by some other crumbling democracies, has caused several accidents; adding yet more contaminates to a heavy polluted atmosphere. Life on the planet surface is dying; starved of sunlight. The International Space and Science Federation is trying to synthesis the molecular structure of the crystals; whilst developed countries are accelerating construction of underground cities. Here, there is one energy source still available… heat from the earth’s molten core. However, something is returning to haunt humanity and the machines of men are immune. A call to the past may be our last chance…
Extract from the book
‘Sir, Enigma has released the contaminated pod, five minutes to commencement of re-entry!’
‘Is there anything left; anything at all?’
‘Negative Sir, Centinal Wing is all but destroyed; we have three D Class returning badly damaged. There is nothing else; anything that moves on her is vaporised.’
‘Where is the pod now?’
‘Aligning with the trajectory corridor; positioning for re-entry Sir.’
‘Then we are lost. Once it descends into the lower levels the Humatron will eject the diffusers. Mass homicide… extinction within a few months.’
‘Wait a minute, Sir! I’ve got a trace, climbing through the stratosphere.’
‘Sergeant, quickly, lock onto that contact, what is it, where is it from?’
‘Whatever it is, Enigma has seen it and she’s manoeuvring; reducing orbital concentricity, to get a better angle for her laser. Cant be more than a few seconds.’
